City of the Dead visits the Michigan Irish Music Festival

Since 2010, City of the Dead has brought local history to life through their tours of Evergreen Cemetery – Muskegon’s oldest city-owned cemetery. They’re taking their show on the road to MIMF. Join them to meet past residents in full period costume and hear the fascinating stories they have to share.

Children’s Story Time with Hackley Public Library

Wee ones and caregivers can join in the fun during Story Time with Miss Lydia and Miss Melissa! These special storytellers from Hackley Public Library will share Irish-themed books for all to enjoy, as well as songs and movement activities.

Melissa is the Youth Services Specialist at Hackley Public Library. Her background is in Theatre and Performance Studies (or an MA in FUN!). Melissa loves doing Story Time at Michigan Irish because she gets to meet new people and have fun with Lydia sharing books and songs inspired by Irish folktales and lore.

Lydia has been the Youth Services Librarian at Hackley Public Library for almost ten years, and loves sharing the joys of reading with kids and families. Join a fascinating panel discussion featuring first-generation Irish immigrants from different generations and regions of Ireland as they share the personal stories behind their journeys to the United States. The Book of Kells with Mike Johnson

Have you heard about the Book of Kells? This centuries-old, illuminated manuscript showcases intricate designs and an incredible history. Standing the test of time and surviving perilous conditions, there is so much to discover about the Book of Kells. Learn more during an intriguing presentation from MCC professor Michael Johnson.

Michael Johnson is a professor at Muskegon Community College. His academic degrees include a BA in English from Michigan State University, an MA in Medieval Studies from Western Michigan University, and an ABD in English Doctoral Study from St. Louis University. Some of his hobbies include Science Fiction and Fantasy Literature, as well as Mythology and Folklore.

Irish Food & Drink Demonstration

Chef instructors and students from the Culinary Institute of Michigan will present live demonstrations on how to prepare delicious Irish food and drinks.

The Five Month Flute Challenge with Colin Farrell

Saturday, 4:30 PM – 5:15 PM – Blarney Stage

Learn to play along with Colin on the Flute, an instrument that he has self-taught and mastered over the last five months. All levels of flute players are welcome.

Colin was born in Manchester, England, into a very musical family.

His parents are from Co.Galway and Co.Cavan. Colin started playing the fiddle and tin whistle from an early age and has made a name for himself performing and recording with an array of great musicians in Europe and the US, and has been touring with the Irish traditional supergroup Lúnasa for the last 12 years.

Colin is also a noted composer whose tunes have been played and recorded by numerous bands and musicians. In 2005, Colin was awarded a Masters Degree in Music from Limerick University. Since then he has been living in Florida, and when not touring, Colin has been teaching at schools and various camps around the US and Europe and has been named the 2023 recipient of the Irish Artist in America Achievement Award by the Traditional Irish Music Education Society (TIMES)

Introduction to the Tin Whistle with Larry Halverson

Discover the charm, rhythm, and energy of traditional Irish music through the tin whistle—one of Ireland’s most beloved and accessible instruments. This introductory program welcomes beginners and music enthusiasts alike to explore the whistle’s unique role in Irish musical tradition.
Participants will learn fundamental whistle techniques, simple traditional tunes, and the expressive ornaments that give Irish music its distinctive character. Through hands-on instruction, you’ll be introduced to cuts, taps, rolls, and slides, learning how these embellishments do more than decorate a melody—they create lift, groove, and momentum, helping drive the rhythms of traditional dance music.
Along the way, we’ll explore how generations of musicians have used these techniques to bring tunes to life and connect with Ireland’s rich musical heritage. No prior experience is necessary—just bring your whistle, your curiosity, and a willingness to play.

BIO:
Larry Halverson has studied with some of Ireland’s leading tin whistle and flute players, developing a distinctive style grounded in the rich traditions of Irish music. As a performer with Uneven Ground and The Langford Lads, he brings energy, authenticity, and a deep appreciation for the tradition to audiences throughout the region.
A dedicated teacher and community arts advocate, Larry has shared his expertise at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp, Camp Blodgett, Grand Valley State University, Muskegon Public Schools, and the Michigan Irish Music Festival. Through workshops, school residencies, community programs, and private instruction, he has introduced countless students of all ages and backgrounds to the joy of Irish music. His engaging approach combines practical musicianship with an appreciation for the history, culture, and spirit that make the tradition so enduring.

Put your mixology skills to the test in this fun, hands-on cocktail competition! Enjoy a welcome cocktail featuring Five Farms Irish cream, then create your own twist on a classic cocktail. Experiment with flavors, showcase your creativity and see if your creation impresses the judges. Each participant will receive a gift and competition winners will take home an additional prize. Join Irish singer-songwriter and geologist Enda Reilly for a lively journey through 1.5 billion years of Ireland’s geological story — from the Giant’s Causeway to The Burren and beyond. Discover the fascinating links between Ireland and America’s bedrock — and maybe even a song or two along the way!

Enda Reilly is a Dublin-born singer-songwriter and educator based in Plymouth, Michigan. Named Male Vocalist of the Year 2024 by Ireland Tonight Radio, Enda is an award-winning songwriter whose music and storytelling connect Ireland and America through songs, folklore, history, and culture. A fluent Irish speaker (Gaeilgeoir), he has performed at major Irish festivals across the Midwest and beyond, including Milwaukee Irish Fest, Michigan Irish Music Festival, Iowa Irish Fest, and Penn Mar Irish Festival. His popular presentations blend music with engaging cultural and educational themes.

Whiskey Tasting and Cheese Pairing with Allen Serio of Wonderland

Presenter Mary Tyler taught English at Muskegon Community College for over 30 years, focusing on Shakespeare, Poetry, Creative Writing, Film, and survey of Literature, often focusing on Irish writers. She has a BA and MA in English, as well as a MFA in Poetry and Creative Non-fiction. She’s keen on reading, writing, teaching, guest lecturing, traveling, gardening, attending live performances and concerts, and most things Irish!

The Women of 1916 with Eileen Chlebana

While the men of the 1916 Easter Rising are often remembered, many Irish women also played vital roles in the struggle for Irish independence and later faced imprisonment, public criticism, and political marginalization for their efforts. This presentation explores the courage, sacrifices, and legacy of the women of Cumann na mBan and other activists who challenged both British rule and the societal barriers facing women in early twentieth-century Ireland.

Eileen Boyle Chlebana was born in Carrickmacross, County Monaghan, Ireland, in 1958. She immigrated to Alma, Michigan, with her parents and four brothers, where the family was sponsored by her mother’s sister (war bride) and husband. Eileen graduated from Ferris State College and married John Chlebana. The couple later moved to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, where Eileen worked as a social worker in a nursing home.

Their family grew to include two children, Sam and Molly, both born in Iron River, Michigan. When John joined the United States Air Force, the family relocated to Eglin Air Force Base in Florida before eventually returning to Michigan and settling in Mattawan, where they raised their children.

Throughout her life, Eileen has remained deeply connected to her Irish heritage. She and her husband traveled extensively throughout the Midwest while her daughter participated in Irish dance competitions. Eileen’s passion for Irish culture later inspired her to launch her own Irish vending business, Celtic Seasons. For 22 years, she sold merchandise at festivals and feiseanna throughout the region and eventually opened an Irish gift store in Grand Haven, Michigan. She retired from the business in 2023.

Eileen has been an active leader and volunteer in West Michigan’s Irish community. Her involvement includes serving as a member of the Kalamazoo Irish Club Program Chair and Cultural Event Organizer, President of the West Michigan Irish American Club (WMIA), and founder of Hooley for Healing, a fundraising event supporting local cancer patients. She also organized St. Patrick’s Day meal ministry programs in partnership with Community in Kalamazoo and is currently a member of the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians (LAOH) of Grand Rapids.

Eileen frequently travels to Ireland to visit family and enjoys spending time at her cabin in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Her hobbies include pickleball, yoga, reading, gardening, and travel.

Today, Eileen is excited to continue sharing her love of Irish culture and heritage as a member of the Michigan Irish Music Festival Cultural Committee.

School Songs of the Donegal Gaeltacht with Cathal Ó Curráin

This singing workshop explores the rich and distinctive song tradition of Northwest Donegal, with a particular focus on school songs. Participants will engage with songs that carry the voice and spirit of the Gaeltacht and which formed the foundation for many singers and musicians from the region. Through a blend of practical singing and cultural context, the workshop offers a deeper understanding of the songs and the community it comes from. No prior knowledge of the language is required.

Cathal Ó Curráin is an award-winning traditional musician and singer from Gaoth Dobhair in the Donegal Gaeltacht, an area renowned for its rich Irish-language and musical heritage. Raised in a family of singers, he developed a deep connection to the Donegal song tradition from an early age.

A fluent Irish speaker, Cathal is known for his distinctive singing style and his sensitive, authentic approach to traditional song. His work is deeply rooted in the songs and cultural traditions of North West Donegal, particularly those passed down through generations.
He has performed internationally and collaborated with artists such as Aoife Scott, Ron Block (Alison Krauss & Union Station), The Friel Sisters, The High Seas, and Bláth na hÓige.

Learn to play the Bodhran with Dave Curley

This workshop will give a brief overview of the history of the Irish drum, the Bodhran. Come and learn to play (using a pizza box). Open to everyone and all ages.

Dave Curley is a multi-instrumentalist, singer, and dancer from Corofin, Co. Galway who has made big waves in the Irish music scene in Ireland, Eurport and the USA. After graduating from the University of Limerick’s groundbreaking Irish Music and Dance programme with a 1st class honours, Dave became a creative member of award winning bands SLIE and RUNA. Dave has been appearing at the Michigan Irish Music Festival since 2009. At the festival, Dave has performed with SLIDE, Runa, One for the Foxes, Celtic Sparkle and the Crannua Collective, to name just a few.

Session Tent

Nestled near the lively Grafton Street, the Session Tent is a vibrant cultural centerpiece of the Michigan Irish Music Festival. Open Friday through Sunday, this welcoming space invites festival-goers to bring their instrument and dive into authentic Irish “session” music. Showcasing spontaneous, community-driven jam sessions where attendees join together, sometimes alongside festival performers, to celebrate in the rich tradition of Irish tune-making. The Hedge School and the Blarney Stage

These are the locations for “learning” about a wide variety of Irish traditions and customs. Listen to presentations on the Book of Kells, Poetry from a local poet on “An Irish Family in America”, sing along to Sea Shanties, and Storytelling for families and adults. You can also try your hand at learning how to play a Tin Whistle, join in the Interactive Drum Workshop, and put together a flower arrangement in a Five Farms Irish Cream bottle! Don’t miss the story time for children and the Food and Drink demonstration by the Culinary Institute of Michigan. The Hedge School is also the location for the Saturday afternoon Whiskey, Craft Beer and Five Farms Irish Cream Tasting classes.

You’ll also find static exhibits throughout the festival grounds on a variety of topics.

The Michigan Feis

VanDyk Mortgage Convention Center, starting 8:00 am (doors open at 7:00 am)

Since 2008, the Michigan Irish Music Festival has partnered with the Ardán Academy of Irish Dance both to hold a traditional Irish dance competition, known as a Feis (pronounced fesh). A Feis (pronounced “fesh”) is a traditional Irish dance competition sanctioned by CLRG, the world’s largest Irish dance governing body.

The Michigan Feis is open to all to apply and takes place offsite at VanDyk Mortgage Convention on Saturday morning.

Saturday evening, following the Feis, attendees are invited to take in the thrilling Parade of Champions on stage at the festival, where top dancers showcase the high-energy footwork reminiscent of Riverdance. These talented performers, some of whom have competed at the World Championships, will dazzle you with their skill and artistry.

The Ward Music Archive

Featuring the exhibit “Postcards from the 1916 Irish Rebellion,” the Ward Irish Music Archives is dedicated to the preservation of Irish and Irish-American music and culture in all its forms. It is a year-round educational arm of CelticMKE, home of Milwaukee Irish Fest.
